Waimea Water Augmentation Committee presents Lee Dam feasibility study reports

The Waimea Water Augmentation Committee (WWAC) presented its Stage Two final reports on the Lee Dam Feasibility Study at a public meeting in Brightwater on the 8 February 2010. The reports were prepared by consultants Tonkin and Taylor.

Survey results show overwhelming support for Lee Dam

More than 94 percent of people who responded to a survey about the proposed dam in the upper Lee Valley said they supported the dam being built. A large number also said they thought building the dam was urgent and should proceed as soon as possible.

Tasman district residents - ‘start your bicycles’
Everyone in the Tasman district is being encouraged to leave their cars behind and jump on their bikes to get to work and school on Wednesday 17 February for Go By Bike Day.
National Go By Bike Day, part of the annual Bike Wise Month, will see free Go By Bike Breakfasts being held in up to 50 New Zealand locations, with free food and entertainment for everyone attending. Last year more than 9,800 New Zealanders took part in 57 Go By Bike Day Breakfasts, and this year the events are expected to be just as popular.

Look out zebra crossing
What’s black and white and quite unexpected on a pedestrian zebra crossing? A zebra of course!
Zebras will be found walking across various Tasman and Nelson pedestrian crossings during the start of the new school term from Thursday 4 February. They will be there to remind motorists to look for pedestrians at these crossings and to be prepared to stop if necessary.

Tasman district gets ready to roll
Tasman district residents are being encouraged to dust off their saddles for a series of free biking events taking place throughout February 2010 as part of Bike Wise Month.
Bike Wise Month, funded by the NZ Transport Agency and the Ministry of Health, is New Zealand’s annual celebration of the bicycle – invented nearly 200 years ago - and the health, environmental, social and financial benefits it uniquely offers.

Connecting Tasman - Draft Tasman Regional Land Transport Strategy 2009
Tasman’s Draft Regional Land Transport Strategy – Connecting Tasman - which includes Cycling, Pedestrian, Passenger Transport and Travel Demand Management is available for public consultation.
The purpose of the Regional Land Transport Strategy (RLTS) is to provide direction and guidance on the land transport outcomes sought by the region to meet current and future land transport needs. It identifies the key policies, actions and the role of all land transport modes and considers the most desirable means of providing the desired outcomes.
This RLTS plays a crucial role in the planning and funding structure for land transport in Tasman District. It is the means by which the region can ‘take stock’ of existing and future travel conditions, issues, problems and opportunities as the basis for identifying a longer term strategy for action. The RLTS provides the basis for the formulation of detailed proposals in the Regional Land Transport Programme, which becomes part of the National Land Transport Programme.
There are a number of issues, that are current now and that will arise in the future, that will impact on the opportunity to realise Council’s vision. The RLTS identifies these issues and provides direction on the outcomes that Tasman desires over the next thirty years. The strategy is reviewed every six years.
The Tasman RLTS adopts a “transport system” approach, which considers the land transport matters as a whole by looking at vehicles, transport users, the network infrastructure and the interactions between them. Accordingly, the strategy seeks to improve the current system, not just by implementing roading improvements, but by a mix of education, enforcement and engineering measures.

Waimea River Park Draft Management Plan
This management plan provides for the management and development of river berm land alongside the Waimea River and lower Wairoa and Wai-iti rivers in Tasman District. These lands are held by Tasman District Council for the primary purposes of river control and soil conservation. This management plan has been prepared in response to public enthusiasm for these lands to be managed for a wider range of uses, such as nature conservation, historic resource protection, public access and recreation. To facilitate this objective, the lands have been grouped together as the Waimea River Park.
Tasman District Council is obliged to continue to manage lands within the Waimea River Park for river control and soil conservation. This management plan identifies other values and uses of the park lands and outlines how these values and uses can be provided for while not compromising the primary management objectives. The plan seeks to give guidance and clear direction for management of the park by Tasman District Council for the next ten years, while remaining flexible enough to provide for changing circumstances within that period.
