2009 Skatepark Tour impresses once again

Tasman Skatepark Tour Review 2009

The Tasman Skatepark Tour delivered on its promise to provide a bigger and better skate and BMX show and once again a great success, reaching out to the local communities through the six regional skateparks the District has to offer.

The tour averaged 40 competitors per event, who thrived on being thrust into the spotlight and being the centre of attention.

"They were all real nice kids who obviously worked hard and were totally committed to their chosen discipline," said Paul McConachie, council's Recreation Co-ordinator. "The standard of skateboarding and BMXing had advanced a lot from last year's competition, a true indication that extreme sports are continuing their rise in popularity and accessibility."

As well as showcasing the talent of local riders and bikers, the tour was also used to promote positive messages about skatepark use and encourage physical activity and participation. The energy and excitement generated throughout the tour was complemented with well behaved onlookers and a vibrant buzz evident at all locations.

Thanks to tour partners Cheapskates, Village Cycles and HYPE-GS for enabling the smoothly-run competitions. Collectively they were involved in administrative duties, judging and officiating, and ensuring that each event was buzzing. They were great tour ambassadors, adding personality to the overall event.

All of the events drew large crowds (between 150-350 people), who crammed in on the sidelines and huddled under whatever shade they could find as the intense January sun beamed down. Many positive comments were yielded by both spectators and competitors, who collectively enjoyed the experience of being a part of the ‘legendary’ Tasman Skatepark Tour.
