Estuaries and Coastal Embayments

Tasman District is home to several internationally and nationally significant estuaries and sand flats, including Wanganui Inlet, Waimea Inlet and Farewell Spit. They are significant because of the rich life they support, including several threatened and migratory birds and important for commercial and other fish. Over the last century or more most of our estuaries have been subject to various discharges from industry or the river catchments feeding them and from disturbances such as reclaimation. In some cases, these activities have compromised the health of the ecosystem. To determine the health of our estuaries Tasman District Council began an estuary monitoring programme in 2002. More

Many opportunities exist for restoring biodiversity, landscape and amenity values. While as yet there are no formal restoration plans for our estuaries, the following document has some useful pointers.

Mapua Clean Up

The former Fruitgrowers Chemical Company Site at Mapua is the most contaminated pesticide site in New Zealand. It is where the FCC factory operated from the 1930s to 1988, formulating hundreds of different agrichemicals, for local and national use.

Their products included the persistent organochlorine insecticides DDT, DDE and DDD, dieldrin, aldrin and lindane. These pesticides were withdrawn from use in the 1970s because of their toxicity and the fact that they bioaccumulate in the foodweb and take decades to break down. Due to spills and some waste being buried on site, these organochlorine pesticides and have remained at high concentrations in the soil on parts of the site, and contaminated areas of the adjacent estuary.
