Golden Bay
To celebrate the ‘meet the locals’ theme of Conservation Week you are invited to view videos produced by local naturalist and gifted film maker, Garry Lewis. Garry has taken a sabbatical this year from his role as science teacher at Collingwood Area School and has been employed by the Royal Society to investigate in detail the small plants and animals which dwell in the bush around the Whanganui Inlet. Garry's videos have amazed and enchanted those who have already viewed them and we feel honoured that he is willing for them to receive this public viewing. They will be shown at the Community Centre on Thursday 11 September at 7.30 pm. Supper served.
Free tour of the Labyrinth Rocks Park in Golden Bay, led by Geoff Rennison on Saturday 13 of September at 1.00 pm. Meet at the Labyrinth Rocks, along the road to the Takaka Transfer Station, at Motupipi opposite Three Oaks. Over many years as the Dept. of Conservation’s manager for Golden Bay, Geoff has acquired a special knowledge and fascination for the kaarst systems of Golden Bay. Labyrinth Rocks, with its myriad of caves and tunnels and walls of sculptured rock, is a national treasure, a truly remarkable example of limestone sculpture. Along with Pupu Springs, and some of our cave systems, it provides a very accessible insight into Golden Bay’s unique geological history. At the completion of the walk we will share afternoon tea and use the opportunity to officially honour Dave Whittaker, geologist/engineer, who in his retirement re-discovered the Labyrinth Rocks from beneath a dense tangle of weeds, and created this hugely popular and unique tourist attraction which we hope will continue to amaze us and visitors to Golden Bay, well into the future.
