Council is proud to announce that is has achieved Accreditation and been registered as a Building Consent Authority by the Department of Building and Housing under the Building Act 2004.
Tasman District Council was the 47th of the 76 Councils nationwide seeking to be registered. Katrina Bach, Chief Executive of the Department of Building and Housing presented the certificate to Council on 6 August 2008.
The Building Consent Authority Accreditation and Registration Scheme is aimed at making sure Councils have appropriate systems and processes, resources and equipment and technical capability to function properly. The scheme has emerged from the Building Act 2004 reforms aimed at ensuring buildings are built right first time.
Mayor Richard Kempthorne said the increased requirements of the Building Act have put pressure on everyone in the building industry.
Council’s Regulatory Manager, Jean Hodson, said that the implications of the Act would be ongoing with the next visit from the standards authority due in November 2009.
“We’ll be working hard to continue to provide the best service we can. Just because we have been accredited doesn’t mean we can go back. There will be new requirements for Councils and the industry will also come under the spotlight with the new Licensed Building Practitioners scheme. This will involve the licensing of building professionals by Central Government and Council is happy to support the trade and professional bodies as they gear up. We know what they will have to go through under the new regulatory environment,” said Jean.
