Population
 
2006 Census figures put Tasman District's resident population at 44,625, which is an increase of about 8 percent since the last census in 2001. This figure represents about 1.1 percent of the country's total population.

Most of Tasman District's urban population lives in and around Richmond (11,712).

Tasman also has the country's highest percentage of people of European ethnicity - 96.8 percent.

The number of Maori, European, Pacific Island and Asian residents has increased markedly since 1991, with Maori increasing by 60.5 percent. The main iwi represented in the wider Tasman region are Ngati Rarua, Ngati Tama (Golden and Tasman Bay), Te Atiawa, Ngati Koata, Ngati Kuia (eastern Tasman Bay) and the Poutini Ngai Tahu (southern areas).

  • 17.2 percent of employees are in the manufacturing industry
  • 18.3 percent are employed in retail trade
  • 9.7 percent are in the accommodation, cafes and restaurants industry
  • 9.7 percent are in agriculture, forestry and fishing
  • 9.1 percent are employed in the construction industry
  • 6.9 percent are in property and business services
