Library users can now browse the internet for free at local branches, with new computers recently installed complete with free high-speed broadband.
Top of the south libraries joined with their West Coast and Canterbury counterparts recently in receiving computers for public use as part of the Aotearoa People's Network. The APN is a national initiative to provide New Zealanders with new technology and become more confident in using computers.
Locally the APN computers are available in Motueka, Murchison, Takaka and Richmond during library opening hours. There is a one hour time limit per individual and bookings will be taken for those who wish to use the computer at a specific time.
Tasman, Nelson and Marlborough libraries all became partners of the network in late October.
“Public libraries have always been about getting information, connecting with the outside world and leisure time activities,” said Lisa Oldham, the Libraries Manager.
"The APN fits perfectly with these three library functions and we are thrilled to have been selected as a partner. We are already seeing the benefits to the community, with people completing CVs and applying for jobs, while young families are communicating with relatives overseas. The Aotearoa People's Network is a great asset for our community."
There are two new computers at the Murchison branch, three at Takaka, four at Motueka and 10 at the Richmond branch.
So far the APN has given computers to 90 libraries across NZ.
