Council unveils plans for Port Tarakohe
Council’s Property manager Jim Frater gave the Golden Bay Community Board an update on the Port Tarakohe Management Plan. Mr Frater said the plans, to be included in the 2009 - 2019 long term plan, include improved facilities for commercial boats on the eastern side of the port, with a new 178-berth marina on the western side to be used for leisure craft. The Council’s plans are designed to accommodate the increase in volume of goods coming through the port, and the expected growth in the shellfish industry.
There are longer-term goals to increase the wharf capacity to accommodate larger vessels, which could in the future allow the port to be used as a base for oil industry service vessels. Feasibility studies into the proposals will begin soon.

Banded Rail seen in Ligar Bay
A pair of banded rail (mohopereru) have recently been seen on the edge of Ligar Bay Inlet by local resident Helen Kingston, who raised concerns about possible disturbance to the birds in the event of future road widening. Community Board Chair Joe Bell said any future road widening work would take the bird’s habitats and well-being into consideration.

Rest home funding approved
The Community Board approved a funding request from the Joan Whiting Rest Home, out of the Ann Castle Memorial Fund, for funds to purchase a second sling to assist caregivers when moving residents. The sling, costing $851 would reduce back strain and make the process easier and more comfortable for both caregiver and resident.
