Hazmobile
Chemical cleanup in Motueka this weekend

21 May 2007

People in Motueka with old chemicals lying around in sheds can safely get rid of them by taking them to the HazMobile this Saturday.

The HazMobile will be in Motueka on Saturday 26 May outside the Tasman District Council Offices, 7 Hickmott Place, Motueka, between 10am and 2pm.

All agrichemicals and other hazardous waste must be brought to the collection point in leak-proof containers, either in the boot of the car or on the back of a ute. Drivers will stay in their vehicles and trained staff will remove the chemicals.

This is a free one-off collection service.

The hazardous wastes that will be accepted include: household chemicals, garden chemicals, oils, fuels, solvents, paints, old gas cylinders and batteries.

Batteries, oil and gas cylinders can also be dropped off free of charge at any of the
District’s Resource Recovery Centres at any time.

The Hazmobile was in Golden Bay last weekend and more than 70 vehicles arrived to drop off a large amount of hazardous waste.

This included about 800kg of farm and domestic agricultural chemicals, along with:
• 7.6kg of medical supplies
• 30kg of domestic cleaning chemicals
• 56kg of acids
• 100 litres of liquid photographic chemicals
• 30kg of powdered photographic chemicals
• 5kg of small rechargeable and lithium batteries
• Approximately 700 litres of used engine oil
• 40 litres of petrol and kerosene
• 470kg of water and solvent based paints
• 290kg of epoxy and specialist paints
• 143 lead acid batteries (approximately 1.9 tonnes)
• 12 used LPG gas cylinders
