Memorial plaques planned for Decks Reserve
Council plans to install memorial plaques in the concrete pathway that runs around the edge of the park at Decks Reserve. These plaques will commemorate significant historical events, as well as people who have played an important role in the history of Motueka. Council is being assisted by the Motueka Museum and the Motueka Historica Society in researching items of interest to be included in the plaques. There are also plans to build a Japanese tea house at the northern end of the existing Japanese garden. Both of these projects should be completed by the end of June 2008.
Recycling bin needs suitable site
The Motueka Community Board and Our Town Motueka are looking for a site for a recycling bin in High Street, similar to one installed in Trafalgar Street, Nelson. Parkes Automotive of Motueka donated funds for the purchase of the three-bin unit, but installation of the bin, which will take paper, glass and plastics for recycling, cannot go ahead until a suitable site has been identified.
Cycleway strategy supported
Council is working on the shared footpath and cycle way between Queen Victoria Street, Motueka, and the Lower Moutere store. Roading Asset Engineer Steve Elkington said the work should be completed by the end of the financial year. The Motueka Community Board is keen to support the Cycleway strategy in Motueka and is looking at other possible proposals for cycleway developments.
Motueka West development options identified
Community Board Chair David Ogilvie has identified zoning options for the Motueka West area, (the area to the west of SH 60 to Chamberlain St, north to the Motueka River and south to the Moutere River). There are no plans to re-zone to the east of the township other than by non-complying resource consent applications. Current commercial, retail and industrial zones are expected to remain the same with only minor amendments.
Mr Ogilvie stated that the options for zoning for the west of Motueka are residential, rural-residential, rural, industrial, commercial and retail. The Motueka West Environment and Planning Strategy will look at recent studies that have identified the town’s projected needs for various zonings, and plan accordingly for growth as anticipated. Major issues to be considered include providing infrastructure and industrial parks, the best mixture of low and high density housing for the town, and the location of retail and commercial development will all be considered. Other issues to be discussed are the location of a State Highway bypass, protecting productive land and maintaining the town’s intrinsic character.
The planning process has a two year time frame, with a discussion document available to the public in June 2008, three months of public comment and meetings following on from that, and notification of the variation to the TRMP to be achieved by late 2009.
