Motueka has been selected as one of 15 teams to compete for the title of Top Town in New Zealand.
Every council was invited to enter a team and Tasman District Councillor Judene Edgar took up the challenge and put in a bid on behalf of Motueka, in conjunction with the Motueka Recreation Centre.
Thirty five towns from all over the country applied to be part of the televised competition.
"Top Town was a New Zealand institution," she said. "Over and above the bad haircuts, stubbies and Howard Morrison's flared trousers, it was about having fun, team spirit, and typified the competitive Kiwi attitude."
The television show Top Town began in 1976 and was originally hosted by Sir Howard Morrison.
The entire competition will be held over eight days in Christchurch in early December 2008. Now the hunt is on to find six men and six women to make up the Motueka Marvels team. Anyone living in the wider Motueka area, or who comes from Motueka is eligible to take part.
Motueka Recreation Centre Manager Brent Maru will oversee the team selection. Brent was involved with the previous top town series when it travelled around the provinces.
Cr Edgar said cheer squads, supporters and mascots were all welcome. Anyone who is interested in taking part, supporting the team or providing sponsorship can contact Cr Edgar by email at Judene.edgar@clear.net.nz.
The towns in this year's competition are: Ashburton, Gisborne, Gore, Greymouth, Masterton, Motueka, Oamaru, Otorohanga, Papakura, Queenstown, Taupo, Timaru, Whakatane, Whangarei and the host city Christchurch.
