Joint Council support of Public Sculpture Consultation The public of Tasman and Nelson will have an opportunity to discuss the value of public sculpture at a meeting jointly supported by the Tasman District and Nelson City Councils.
“The purpose of the meeting is to provide people with an opportunity to discuss why we have public sculpture," said Nelson Mayor Kerry Marshall.
Mayor Marshall said he was pleased to be jointly sponsoring the meeting with Tasman. “This public meeting is timely given the recent vigorous debate about public sculpture. It is also timely given that there are a number of projects for public outdoor sculptures in the pipeline."
At the meeting, internationally renowned sculptor Neil Dawson has been invited to give a presentation on the public sculpture commissions he has created, including the Chalice in Christchurch square, Ferns suspended above the Wellington City Art Gallery and Bomber Command, the war memorial in Canberra, Australia.
“We are thrilled that Neil Dawson can offer us his experience and ideas," said Mayor Marshall.
Tasman District Councillor Stuart Borlase said his Council are supportive of the combined District meeting. "To be renowned as New Zealand's most creative region we have to have a multi-dimensional approach. People have to be able to see creativity and be able to immerse themselves in it. High quality public art certainly goes a long way towards achieving that," he said. “Compared to cities like Wellington and New Plymouth we have very little to showcase our commitment to the arts in our public spaces. Other cities and regions have embarked on highly successful design projects to connect their recreational, residential and CBD zones by commissioning art works which have gained them international reputations as places to visit and enjoy."
Nelson Sculpture Trust Chairman and Trustee Andrew Greenhough said, "Public art has an important part to play in a community which values creativity and innovation. The Trust supports the purpose of this meeting which is aimed at providing better insight to the vision that exists for a richer and more exciting public art environment. Those who attend the meeting will have an opportunity to ask questions of the presenters and Council representatives and we are encouraging people to send in any questions ahead of the meeting.”
Elizabeth Thomson, member of the panel of experts advising the Wellington Sculpture Trust will also provide input to the public meeting. The meeting will be held in the Tasman Council Chambers on Thursday 7 May at 7.00 pm.
