Top of the South Indicators Report - 2009
Tasman residents are living longer, exercise more, enjoy low unemployment and feel safe in their environment.
A new report shows the Top of the South has many positives as a place to both live and work. The three councils – Tasman District Council, Nelson City and Marlborough District Council – produced the combined report, which also helps them fulfil their obligation, under legislation, to monitor community wellbeing. It looks at how well the region is doing socially, culturally, environmentally and economically.
In issuing the report, regional Mayors Richard Kempthorne, Kerry Marshall and Alistair Sowman said: “The themes, issues and concepts of wellbeing are common to all three councils.”
“The report confirms a lot of things that I think residents already knew deep down”, said Mayor Kempthorne. “The low unemployment figures, cleaner air reports and amount of exercise and healthy living undertaken by Tasmans residents has a real impact on the quality of life that people enjoy in our district. That’s not only refelcted in the life expectancy figures but every day in peoples attitudes and outlook on life.”
The Top of the South Indicators Report will now be prepared every three years to see how communities are progressing towards achieving their goals. This first report sets the baseline for measuring trends.

Water in the Waimea Basin: Community Values and Water Management Options Richmond and the Waimea region are experiencing growth in migration and ongoing demand for residential and lifestyle development (coastal, rural and semi-rural). The climate and attractiveness of the Nelson-Tasman environment also encourages both national and international tourism. This growth generates need for services and water and wastewater infrastructure. Other factors impacting on water availability and use are demands associated with changes in land use along with intensification of land use (Boffa Miskell, MWH: 2003). Issues around water quality and quantity comprise a substantial area of study, much of which precedes the Feasibility Study, such as the Tasman Regional Water Study (Lincoln Environmental, MWH, Agfirst, 2003).
