Queen St Mile
An old classic Richmond street running race is on again this weekend as Tasman District searches for the quickest downhill dasher over the Queen Street Mile.

The event is open for people of all ages and abilities to participate.
The first Queen Street Mile was held in 1983 and has attracted big names such as Rod Dixon. The race is resurrected this year after a 10-year break and organisers are expecting local celebrities and sporting personalities to make up the field.

Three race categories will be running, with the Junior Mile (under 18) igniting the downhill action at 10.15 am, followed by the Serious Senior Mile commencing at 10.45 am, and concluding with the Walkers, Waddlers, Pushchairs and Prams Mile at 11.15 am.

Prizegiving is to be hosted by El Taverna at the conclusion of the morning's races.

Runners can register on the day at the info kiosk outside Tasman District Council from 9am, and are required to be limbered up and raring to go at the Queen Street-Hill Street intersection starting line 20 minutes prior to their race.

Support from the vocal local public is also sought to encourage and spur competitors on from various curb side positions along the race circuit.

Entry into this much anticipated event is a mere gold coin which is to be donated to the development of a new athletics track in the Saxton Field Sporting complex.

The Queen Street Mile is brought to you by the Tasman District Council, in association with Waimea Harriers and with support from El Taverna, Taylors Footwear, and Smith’s Shoes.
