Tasman District Council has formally adopted the Terms of Reference for the Top of the South Land Transport Liaison Forum. It will now be forwarded to the Nelson City Council and the Marlborough District Council.
The forum will bring together the key decision-makers with the common goal of agreeing on priorities for key roading projects for the top of the South roading network. The liaison forum does not replace the regional Road Land Transport Committees.
Mayor Richard Kempthorne said the Mayors, Deputy Mayors and Engineering chairs of the respective Councils will attend the first liaison forum meeting within the next three months.
He said he had taken on board the message from central government that it wants high level cooperation between regions to achieve a sustainable roading network.
"Establishing the Top of the South Land Transport Liaison Forum complies with the new legislation and achieves a cooperative approach, while preserving local autonomy to sort out local issues," he said.
"Collectively, the forum will form a powerful lobby that can only help the greater top of the South region's transport ambitions."
