Council adopts targeted rate for Community Boards 26 June 2008
Tasman District Council has voted in favour of adopting a targeted rate to fund the Motueka and Golden Bay Community Boards at its meeting today.
The Golden Bay and Motueka Councillors, along with Mayor Richard Kempthorne voted against the introduction of the targeted rate. They were outnumbered by the Moutere-Waimea, Richmond and Lakes-Murchison Councillors.
Mayor Richard Kempthorne said the majority of Councillors were of the view that a targeted rate was a fair and equitable method of funding Community Boards.
Council will continue to cover the first $14,560 of costs for each of the Community Boards from the general rate. He noted that this was considerably more than the district's community councils and associations received from Council.
The targeted rate will cover the balance of expenditure on the two Community Boards.
Mayor Kempthorne said his own view has always been that Council should cover the cost of Community Boards or associations - whichever the communities want from the general rate fund.
"My personal position has not changed, and I was not convinced by the submissions received in support of a targeted rate. However on this occasion it was the majority view of council to adopt the targeted rate," he said.
