Water for the Waimea Basin (Lee Dam)
Historically the Waimea Basin has been short of water because demand by irrigation users, along with urban and industrial use exceeds the supply at certain times. The most recent studies carried out by Tasman District Council show water resources to be over-allocated by 22 percent in drought conditions.
At the moment about 3700 hectares of land has water permits for irrigation, but a further 1500 hectares could be irrigated if more water was available. With continuing growth in the district there is increasing demand for water to supply the towns and to industry as well. More...
Motupiko Catchment Water Augmentation
Growth in irrigated agriculture in the Motupiko area is severely hampered by the full allocation of available water resources in the Motupiko catchment. In response to the situation a community group called Motupiko Catchment Water Augmentation Committee (MCWAC) representing farmers and landowners from the area is investigating the feasibility of water augmentation/enhancement.
Currently there are only 13 water permits in Motupiko covering irrigation of 191 hectares and subscribing to the allocation limit of 110 l/s in the Tasman District Council's water management plan. The catchment has a further 150 landowners who do not have water permits who could potentially benefit if there was more water available. More...
