All water rationing restrictions have been removed with immediate effect for the Waimea Plains Tasman District Council’s Dry Weather Task Force Convenor Dennis Bush-King said today.
“We have had a considerable amount of rain in the last 48 hours across the district. This has flushed our rivers and will recharge the aquifers. The good thing was the rain came from the right direction, with parts of the Eastern Richmond Ranges getting up to 150mm and the lower Waimea Plains 73mm. Most of Golden Bay received more than 100mm of rain and most of the Motueka Catchment received more than 50mm of rain. The Wairoa River at the Wairoa Gorge peaked at 208 cubic metres/sec but is beginning to drop now.
“We will continue to monitor the situation and we are keeping hosing restrictions on in the urban and rural water supply areas. The Council supply systems are under pressure and while people won't be needing to water their gardens after this rain, we still need to balance demand against the supply,” Mr Bush-King said.
Hosing restrictions are in place in the urban areas of Richmond, Mapua – Ruby Bay, Brightwater, Hope, Tapawera and Wakefield and the rural water supply schemes of 88 Valley, Redwood Valley, and Dovedale. Hand held hosing only is permitted on odd and even calendar days corresponding to the house street number. Owners of private wells in the areas subject to rationing are also directed to only water domestic gardens every second day.
Water users are still required to submit their meter readings to Council on a weekly basis until the end of the season.
